Working Resources BadBlue 2.55 ISAPI ext.dll mfcisapicommand memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Working Resources BadBlue 2.55 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality in the library ext.dll of the component ISAPI. The manipulation of the argument mfcisapicommand with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in ext.dll in BadBlue 2.55 allows remote attackers execute arbitrary code via a long mfcisapicommand parameter.

The bug was discovered 12/01/2004. The weakness was published 02/25/2005 by Andres Tarasco (Website). The advisory is available at This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0595 since 03/01/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published 17 hours after the advisory. The exploit is available at It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 86 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17241 (BadBlue ext.dll mfcisapicommand Parameter Remote Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3816. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3709.
