A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Alt-N MDaemon up to 9.0.6 (Mail Server Software). Affected is some unknown processing of the component POP3 Server. The manipulation of the argument USER
with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in the POP3 server in Alt-N Technologies MDaemon before 9.0.6 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via long strings that contain @ characters in the (1) USER and (2) APOP commands.
The bug was discovered 08/21/2006. The weakness was shared 08/23/2006 by Sasa Jusic and Leon Juranic with INFIGO IS (Website). The advisory is shared for download at infigo.hr. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-4364 since 08/25/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Leon Juranic in Perl and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at infigo.hr. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22256 (MDaemon < 9.0.6 POP3 Server USER / APOP Command Remote Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context r.
Upgrading to version 9.06 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at altn.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1866.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28517), Tenable (22256) and Exploit-DB (2245). The entries 2645, 33104, 37697 and 41529 are related to this item.
