A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in FreeBSD up to 6.1 (Operating System). This affects some unknown functionality of the component LPC Option Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the sppp driver in FreeBSD 4.11 through 6.1, NetBSD 2.0 through 4.0 beta before 20060823, and OpenBSD 3.8 and 3.9 before 20060902 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (panic), obtain sensitive information, and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted Link Control Protocol (LCP) packets with an option length that exceeds the overall length, which triggers the overflow in (1) pppoe and (2) ippp. NOTE: this issue was originally incorrectly reported for the ppp driver.
The bug was discovered 08/23/2006. The weakness was disclosed 08/24/2006 by Martin Husemann and Pavel Cahyna (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at security.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-4304 since 08/22/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57294 (FreeBSD : opera -- multiple vulnerabilities (a4a809d8-25c8-11e1-b531-00215c6a37bb) (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.FreeBSD.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 6 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28562) and Tenable (57294). The entries 59612 and 59611 are pretty similar.
