bpftpserver service in bulletproof ftp server 2.4.0.31 does not properly drop privileges before opening files through the help menu which allows local users to gain privileges.
The weakness was released 05/03/2005 by Reed Arvin (Website). The advisory is shared at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-1371 since 05/02/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
