Linux Kernel up to 2.6.17.11 on IA64/SPARC ELF Cross-Region Mapping denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.17.11 on IA64/SPARC (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component ELF Cross-Region Mapping Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Linux kernel 2.6.17 and earlier, when running on IA64 or SPARC platforms, allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) via a malformed ELF file that triggers memory maps that cross region boundaries.

The bug was discovered 08/23/2006. The weakness was released 09/18/2006 by Kirill Korotaev with Kernel Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-4538 since 09/05/2006. The attack needs to be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67609 (Oracle Linux 3 : kernel (ELSA-2007-1049)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115509 (Red Hat Kernel Security Update (RHSA-2007:0014)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29007) and Tenable (67609). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 2589, 2647, 2661 and 2714.
