Linux Kernel up to 5.10.145/5.15.70/5.19.11 gpio null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
5.5$0-$5k0.00

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.145/5.15.70/5.19.11. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component gpio. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: gpio: mockup: fix NULL pointer dereference when removing debugfs We now remove the device's debugfs entries when unbinding the driver. This now causes a NULL-pointer dereference on module exit because the platform devices are unregistered *after* the global debugfs directory has been recursively removed. Fix it by unregistering the devices first.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-48663 since 02/25/2024. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/28/2024).

Upgrading to version 5.10.146, 5.15.71 or 5.19.12 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch bdea98b98f84/18352095a0d5/af0bfabf06c7/b7df41a6f79d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
