SuSE Linux 9.0/9.1/9.2/9.3/10.0 Local Privilege Escalation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in SuSE Linux 9.0/9.1/9.2/9.3/10.0 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a local privilege escalation vulnerability. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

chkstat in suse linux 9.0 through 10.0 allows local users to modify permissions of files by creating a hardlink to a file from a world-writable directory which can cause the link count to drop to 1 when the file is deleted or replaced which is then modified by chkstat to use weaker permissions.

The weakness was shared 10/27/2005 by Stefan Nordhausen (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.suse.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-3321. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (22853). The entry 26685 is related to this item.
