scponly up to 4.1 expected memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in scponly up to 4.1 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function expected. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

scponlyc in scponly 4.1 and earlier, when the operating system supports LD_PRELOAD mechanisms, allows local users to execute arbitrary code with root privileges by creating a chroot directory in their home directory, hard linking to a system setuid application, and using a modified LD_PRELOAD to modify expected function calls in the setuid application.

The bug was discovered 12/29/2005. The weakness was shared 12/27/2005 by Max Vozeler (FIRST) (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-4532 since 12/28/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20358 (GLSA-200512-17 : scponly: Multiple privilege escalation issues), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23874) and Tenable (20358). The entry 27780 is related to this item.
