Linux Kernel up to 2.6.14.3 dst_ca.c memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file dst_ca.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the CA-driver (dst_ca.c) for TwinHan DST Frontend/Card in Linux kernel 2.6.12 and other versions before 2.6.15 allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code by "reading more than 8 bytes into an 8 byte long array".

The bug was discovered 11/08/2005. The weakness was presented 12/31/2005 by Perceval Anichini (Website). The advisory is available at ubuntulinux.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-4639 since 01/10/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 197 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20939 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2006:040)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 2.6.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23988) and Tenable (20939). See 1942, 1945, 1943 and 1944 for similar entries.
