Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4.8 UFS ffs_mountfs numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer overflow in the ffs_mountfs function in Mac OS X 10.4.8 and FreeBSD 6.1 allows local users to cause a denial of service (panic) and possibly gain privileges via a crafted DMG image that causes "allocation of a negative size buffer" leading to a heap-based buffer overflow, a related issue to CVE-2006-5679. NOTE: a third party states that this issue does not cross privilege boundaries in FreeBSD because only root may mount a filesystem.

The bug was discovered 01/10/2007. The weakness was shared 01/11/2007 by LMH (Website). The advisory is shared for download at projects.info-pull.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-0229 since 01/12/2007. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at projects.info-pull.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24811 (Mac OS X < 10.4.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2007-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115527 (Apple Mac OS X 10.4.9 and Security Update 2007-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-03-13)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
