Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird up to 1.5.0.3 cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird up to 1.5.0.3 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Certain privileged UI code in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird before 1.5.0.4 calls content-defined setters on an object prototype, which allows remote attackers to execute code at a higher privilege than intended.

The bug was discovered 06/01/2006. The weakness was presented 06/02/2006 by Mikolaj J. Habryn (moz_bug_r_a4) with Cybozu Labs as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-2776 since 06/02/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22122 (RHEL 4 : thunderbird (RHSA-2006:0611)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156230 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Firefox (ELSA-2006:0733,ELSA-2006:0675,ELSA-2006:0610)).

Upgrading to version 1.5.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4656.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26848) and Tenable (22122). See 2174, 2283, 2285 and 2282 for similar entries.
