A vulnerability was found in Centennial Discovery 2006 Featurepack1/6.5 and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part in the library XferWan.exe of the component Packet Parser. Multiple buffer overflows in the CentennialIPTransferServer service (XFERWAN.EXE), as used by (1) Centennial Discovery 2006 Feature Pack 1, (2) Numara Asset Manager 8.0, and (3) Symantec Discovery 6.5, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via long strings in a crafted TCP packet.
The weakness was presented 05/16/2007 by Dyon Balding with Secunia Research (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-1173 since 02/28/2007. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.centennial.co.uk. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 11670. In this case the pattern |ED ED|
is used for detection.
