UFO2000 Svn 1057 multiplay.cpp memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in UFO2000 Svn 1057. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file multiplay.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple array index errors in the (1) recv_rules, (2) recv_select_unit, (3) recv_options, and (4) recv_unit_data functions in multiplay.cpp in UFO2000 svn 1057 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code and cause a denial of service (opponent crash) via certain packet data that specifies an out-of-bounds index.

The bug was discovered 07/16/2006. The weakness was shared 07/24/2006 by Luigi Auriemma (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-3789 since 07/21/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24722 (GLSA-200702-10 : UFO2000: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (27802) and Tenable (24722).
