IBM AIX 5.2.0/5.3.0 libodm ODMPATH memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in IBM AIX 5.2.0/5.3.0 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block in the library libodm. The manipulation of the argument ODMPATH with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the odm_searchpath function in libodm in IBM AIX 5.2.0 and 5.3.0 allows local users to execute arbitrary code via a long ODMPATH environment variable.

The bug was discovered 07/09/2007. The weakness was shared 07/10/2007 with iDefense (Website). The advisory is shared at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-3680 since 07/11/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1661 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65315 (AIX 5.3 TL 7 : bos.rte.odm (U810021)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115594 (IBM AIX libodm Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at aix.software.ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35321) and Tenable (65315). The entries 2474, 2490, 2568 and 2570 are related to this item.
