A vulnerability was found in Trend Micro ServerProtect 5.58 (Anti-Malware Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code of the file EarthAgent.exe. Multiple buffer overflows in the ServerProtect service (SpntSvc.exe) in Trend Micro ServerProtect for Windows before 5.58 Security Patch 4 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via certain RPC requests to certain TCP ports that are processed by the (1) RPCFN_ENG_NewManualScan, (2) RPCFN_ENG_TimedNewManualScan, and (3) RPCFN_SetComputerName functions in (a) StRpcSrv.dll; the (4) RPCFN_CMON_SetSvcImpersonateUser and (5) RPCFN_OldCMON_SetSvcImpersonateUser functions in (b) Stcommon.dll; the (6) RPCFN_ENG_TakeActionOnAFile and (7) RPCFN_ENG_AddTaskExportLogItem functions in (c) Eng50.dll; the (8) NTF_SetPagerNotifyConfig function in (d) Notification.dll; or the (9) RPCFN_CopyAUSrc function in the (e) ServerProtect Agent service.
The bug was discovered 08/21/2007. The weakness was presented 08/22/2007 by Jun Mao with TrendMicro (Website). The advisory is shared at trendmicro.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-4218 since 08/08/2007. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25925 (Trend Micro ServerProtect Multiple Remote Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115619 (Trend Micro ServerProtect Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trendmicro.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5481.
