A vulnerability was found in X.org X11 up to 1.4 (Windowing System Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Composite Pixmap Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the compNewPixmap function in compalloc.c in the Composite extension for the X.org X11 server before 1.4 allows local users to execute arbitrary code by copying data from a large pixel depth pixmap into a smaller pixel depth pixmap.
The bug was discovered 09/09/2007. The weakness was shared 09/10/2007 by Aaron Plattner (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.freedesktop.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-4730 since 09/05/2007. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67572 (Oracle Linux 4 : xorg-x11 (ELSA-2007-0898)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165053 (SUSE Update for Xorg (SUSE-SA:2007:054)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lists.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36535) and Tenable (67572).
