IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Client memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (Backup Software) (affected version unknown). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Client. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the Client Acceptor Daemon (CAD), dsmcad.exe, in certain IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) clients 5.1 before 5.1.8.1, 5.2 before 5.2.5.2, 5.3 before 5.3.5.3, and 5.4 before 5.4.1.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted HTTP headers, aka IC52905.

The weakness was shared 09/20/2007 by Sebastian Appelt (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www-1.ibm.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4880 since 09/13/2007. The attack can only be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 26187 (IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Client Multiple Vulnerabilities (swg21268775)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115927 (IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Client Code Execution and Security Bypass Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at www-1.ibm.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12685. In this case the pattern Host|3A| is used for detection.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36700) and Tenable (26187). The entries 3320 and 38893 are related to this item.
