Linksys WPC300N Wireless-n Notebook Adapter Driver prior bcmwl5.sys Device Driver memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linksys WPC300N Wireless-n Notebook Adapter Driver (Hardware Driver Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Device Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the Broadcom BCMWL5.SYS wireless device driver 3.50.21.10, as used in Cisco Linksys WPC300N Wireless-N Notebook Adapter before 4.100.15.5 and other products, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an 802.11 response frame containing a long SSID field.

The bug was discovered 11/11/2006. The weakness was disclosed 11/14/2006 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-5882 since 11/14/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23637 (Broadcom Wireless Driver (BCMWL5.SYS) Probe Response SSID Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version bcmwl5.sys eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30202) and Tenable (23637).
