Linux Foundation Xen 3.0.3 pygrub input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Xen 3.0.3 (Virtualization Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component pygrub. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

pygrub (tools/pygrub/src/GrubConf.py) in Xen 3.0.3, when booting a guest domain, allows local users with elevated privileges in the guest domain to execute arbitrary commands in domain 0 via a crafted grub.conf file whose contents are used in exec statements.

The bug was discovered 09/22/2007. The weakness was presented 09/27/2007 by Joris van Rantwijk as 1068 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.xensource.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-4993 since 09/20/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/27/2019).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28132 (Ubuntu 7.04 : xen-3.0 vulnerability (USN-527-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156021 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for xen (ELSA-2007-0323)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugzilla.xensource.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36835) and Tenable (28132). See VDB-39486 for similar entry.
