Multiple vulnerabilities in Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.8, Thunderbird before 2.0.0.8, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.5 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via crafted HTML that triggers memory corruption or assert errors.
The weakness was published 10/19/2007 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers as MFSA2007-36 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-5339 since 10/10/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29694 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : MozillaThunderbird (MozillaThunderbird-4811)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165712 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update (SUSE-SR:2008:002)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15383. In this case the pattern XUL_NS
is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8960.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (37281) and Tenable (29694). Similar entries are available at 3409, 3407, 3408 and 3547.
