Microsoft Office 2000/2003/2004/Xp memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Office 2000/2003/2004/Xp (Office Suite Software). Affected is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Microsoft Excel 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, 2003 SP2, 2004 for Mac, and v.X for Mac allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an Excel file with an out-of-range Column field in certain BIFF8 record types, which references arbitrary memory.

The bug was discovered 09/14/2006. The weakness was published 01/09/2007 by Greg MacManus (iDefense) with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-0030 since 01/03/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2773 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23998 (MS07-002: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (927198)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110050 (Microsoft Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-002)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4972.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (23998), SecurityFocus (BID 21925†), OSVDB (31257†), SecurityTracker (ID 1017487†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-13958†). Similar entries are available at VDB-2807, VDB-34322, VDB-34321 and VDB-34319.
