WebCore on Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 and 10.4.10, as used in Safari, does not properly parse HTML comments in TITLE elements, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks and bypass some XSS protection schemes by embedding certain HTML tags within an HTML comment.

The bug was discovered 01/23/2007. The weakness was disclosed 01/23/2007 by DiGiT with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-0478 since 01/24/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24802 (GLSA-200703-10 : KHTML: XSS (XSS) vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115985 (KDE Konqueror KHTML Library Title Cross Site Scripting Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (31846) and Tenable (24802). The entries 23424, 23658, 25650 and 25166 are pretty similar.
