Sun Solaris 10 NFS netgroups access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Sun Solaris 10 (Operating System). This affects some unknown processing of the component NFS. The manipulation of the argument netgroups with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Sun Solaris 10 with the 120011-04 and 120012-04 patches, and later 120011-* and 120012-* patches, allows remote attackers to bypass certain netgroup restrictions and obtain root access to a filesystem via NFS requests from a client root user.

The issue has been introduced in 01/31/2005. The weakness was presented 12/14/2007 with Sun (Website). The advisory is shared at This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-6413 since 12/17/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1047 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29721 (Solaris 10 (x86) : 127954-06), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (39033) and Tenable (29721).
