Digium Asterisk 1.4 Beta/1.4.1/1.4.2 Parser chan_sip.c process_sdp SDP stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Digium Asterisk 1.4 Beta/1.4.1/1.4.2 (Communications System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function process_sdp of the file chan_sip.c of the component Parser. The manipulation of the argument SDP with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the process_sdp function in chan_sip.c of the SIP channel T.38 SDP parser in Asterisk before 1.4.3 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long (1) T38FaxRateManagement or (2) T38FaxUdpEC SDP parameter in an SIP message, as demonstrated using SIP INVITE.

The weakness was presented 04/25/2007 by Barrie Dempster with NGS Software (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securitytracker.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-2293 since 04/26/2007. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25671 (Asterisk SIP Channel T.38 SDP Parsing Multiple Buffer Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and relying on port 5060.

Upgrading to version 1.4.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 14608. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8575.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33895) and Tenable (25671). See 36429 for similar entry.
