Digium Asterisk 1.4.4 2007-04-27 IAX2 Channel Driver denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The IAX2 channel driver (chan_iax2) in Asterisk before 20070504 does not properly null terminate data, which allows remote attackers to trigger loss of transmitted data, and possibly obtain sensitive information (memory contents) or cause a denial of service (application crash), by sending a frame that lacks a 0 byte.

The weakness was presented 05/07/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-2488 since 05/03/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25938 (Debian DSA-1358-1 : asterisk - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165069 (SUSE Security Update for Asterisk (SUSE-SA:2007:034)).

Upgrading to version 1.4.4_2007-04-27 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34085) and Tenable (25938). See 2986, 35774, 35469 and 36430 for similar entries.
