CA Integrated Threat Management prior 8.0.448.0 inocore.dll stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in CA Integrated Threat Management and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block in the library inocore.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

CA Anti-Virus for the Enterprise r8 and Threat Manager r8 before 20070510 use weak permissions (NULL security descriptor) for the Task Service shared file mapping, which allows local users to modify this mapping and gain privileges by triggering a stack-based buffer overflow in InoCore.dll before 8.0.448.0.

The bug was discovered 05/08/2007. The weakness was released 05/09/2007 by Tenable Network Security (binagres) with Tenable Network Security as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-2523 since 05/08/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25218 (CA Multiple Products InoCore.dll File Mapping Manipulation Local Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 8.0.448.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4861.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34205) and Tenable (25218). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at 36705.
