Sun Java System Web Proxy Server up to 4.0.4 SOCKS Proxy stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Sun Java System Web Proxy Server up to 4.0.4 (Firewall Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component SOCKS Proxy. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the SOCKS proxy support (sockd) in Sun Java Web Proxy Server before 4.0.5 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted packets during protocol negotiation.

The bug was discovered 05/25/2007. The weakness was presented 05/25/2007 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-2881 since 05/29/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Upgrading to version 4.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 11680. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8595.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (34524).
