Digium Asterisk up to 1.2.29 SIP input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Digium Asterisk up to 1.2.29 (Communications System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown processing of the component SIP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Asterisk Open Source 1.0.x and 1.2.x before 1.2.29 and Business Edition A.x.x and B.x.x before B.2.5.3, when pedantic parsing (aka pedanticsipchecking) is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via a SIP INVITE message that lacks a From header, related to invocations of the ast_uri_decode function, and improper handling of (1) an empty const string and (2) a NULL pointer.

The weakness was presented 06/04/2008 by Hooi Ng (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.digium.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-2119 since 05/08/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Armando Oliveira and been published 1 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at downloads.digium.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38677 (GLSA-200905-01 : Asterisk: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at security.gentoo.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42823), Exploit-DB (5749), Tenable (38677), OSVDB (46014†) and Secunia (SA30517†). See VDB-45523 for similar entry.
