The bug was discovered 07/08/2008. The weakness was released 07/09/2008 by Bret Moore with iDefense as MS08-040 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-0106 since 01/07/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-040 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6108.
