Gentoo NVClock 0.7 Backend set_default_speeds symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Gentoo NVClock 0.7. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function set_default_speeds of the component Backend. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The set_default_speeds function in backend/backend.c in NVidia NVClock before 0.8b2 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the /tmp/nvclock temporary file.

The bug was discovered 07/24/2007. The weakness was presented 07/03/2007 by Tavis Ormandy (LINUX) with Gentoo Linux (Website). The advisory is shared for download at secunia.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-3531 since 07/03/2007. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25790 (GLSA-200707-08 : NVClock: Insecure file usage), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 0.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
