A vulnerability was found in VMware Workstation 5.5.3 (Virtualization Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality in the library intraprocesslogging.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Absolute path traversal vulnerability in a certain ActiveX control in IntraProcessLogging.dll 5.5.3.42958 in EMC VMware allows remote attackers to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a full pathname in the argument to the SetLogFileName method.
The bug was discovered 07/28/2007. The weakness was presented 07/30/2007 by callAX (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-4059 since 07/30/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40370 (VMSA-2007-0006 : Critical security updates for all supported versions of VMware ESX Server, VMware Server, VMware Workstation, VMware ACE, and VMware Player), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family VMware ESX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116315 (Critical Security Updates for all Supported Versions of VMware ESX Server VMware Server VMware Workstation VMware ACE and VMware Player (VMSA-2007-0006)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5541.
