VMware ESX Server 3.x VCB Command Line input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in VMware ESX Server 3.x (Virtualization Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code block of the component VCB Command Line Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Certain chunk handlers in libpng before 1.0.29 and 1.2.x before 1.2.21 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via crafted (1) pCAL (png_handle_pCAL), (2) sCAL (png_handle_sCAL), (3) tEXt (png_push_read_tEXt), (4) iTXt (png_handle_iTXt), and (5) ztXT (png_handle_ztXt) chunking in PNG images, which trigger out-of-bounds read operations.

The bug was discovered 10/04/2007. The weakness was presented 09/01/2008 with VMware (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.grok.org.uk. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-5269 since 10/08/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67594 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : libpng (ELSA-2007-0992)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115928 (VMware Security Update (VMSA-2008-0014)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (67594). See 2574, 39245, 39887 and 42782 for similar entries.
