PHPBlogger 2.2.7 data/pref.db cleartext storage

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in PHPBlogger 2.2.7 (Log Management Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the file data/pref.db. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cleartext storage vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-312. The product stores sensitive information in cleartext within a resource that might be accessible to another control sphere. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

PHPBlogger stores sensitive information under the web root with insufficient access control, which allows remote attackers to download a database containing an admin password hash via a direct request for data/pref.db. NOTE: this can be easily leveraged for administrative access because composing the authentication cookie only requires the password hash, not the cleartext version.

The weakness was presented 07/28/2007 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-4157 since 08/03/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1555.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25822 (PHP-Blogger pref.db Database Information Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35662) and Tenable (25822). See VDB-86102 for similar entry.
