ISC BIND 8.4.7 DNS Cache unknown vulnerability

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in ISC BIND 8.4.7 (Domain Name Software). This affects an unknown functionality of the component DNS Cache. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The (1) NSID_SHUFFLE_ONLY and (2) NSID_USE_POOL PRNG algorithms in ISC BIND 8 before 8.4.7-P1 generate predictable DNS query identifiers when sending outgoing queries such as NOTIFY messages when answering questions as a resolver, which allows remote attackers to poison DNS caches via unknown vectors. NOTE: this issue is different from CVE-2007-2926.

The bug was discovered 08/27/2007. The weakness was shared 09/11/2007 by Amit Klein as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-2930 since 05/30/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27094 (Solaris 9 (x86) : 114265-23), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 8.4.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36275) and Tenable (27094).
