Sun Solaris 10 Kerberos input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris 10 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown function of the component Kerberos. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The spnego_gss_accept_sec_context function in lib/gssapi/spnego/spnego_mech.c in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) 1.5 through 1.6.3, when SPNEGO is used, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via invalid ContextFlags data in the reqFlags field in a negTokenInit token.

The bug was discovered 03/06/2009. The weakness was presented 04/08/2009 with 0-day (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-0845 since 03/06/2009. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1515 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36535 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : krb5 (MDVSA-2009:082)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216010 (VMWare ESXi 4.1.0 Patch Release ESXi410-201010001 Missing (KB1027753)).

The best possible mitigation is suggested to be disabling the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49448) and Tenable (36535). See 47630, 47629, 51532 and 53257 for similar entries.
