Stack-based buffer overflow in hpc.c in dvips in teTeX and TeXlive 2007 and earlier allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a DVI file with a long href tag.
The bug was discovered 10/17/2007. The weakness was presented 11/13/2007 by Bastien Roucaries (Website). The advisory is shared for download at redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-5935 since 11/13/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 27 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155658 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for teTeX (ELSA-2010-0399)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
