PostgreSQL prior 8.0 numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Algorithmic complexity vulnerability in the regular expression parser in TCL before 8.4.17, as used in PostgreSQL 8.2 before 8.2.6, 8.1 before 8.1.11, 8.0 before 8.0.15, and 7.4 before 7.4.19, allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a crafted "complex" regular expression with doubly-nested states.

The bug was discovered 01/06/2008. The weakness was released 01/09/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-6067 since 11/21/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29933 (CentOS 4 / 5 : postgresql (CESA-2008:0038)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120949 (CentOS Security Update for TCL (CESA-2013:0122)).

Upgrading to version 8.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (39498) and Tenable (29933). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 37348, 40443, 40442 and 40435.
