The msn_emoticon_msg function in slp.c in the MSN protocol plugin in libpurple in Pidgin before 2.7.0 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) via a custom emoticon in a malformed SLP message.
The weakness was disclosed 05/13/2010 by Pierre Noguès with Meta Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at pidgin.im. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1624 since 04/29/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68124 (Oracle Linux 4 : pidgin (ELSA-2010-0788)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118939 (Solaris Pidgin Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at pidgin.im. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
