GUI overlay vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.13 and SeaMonkey before 1.1.9 allows remote attackers to spoof form elements and redirect user inputs via a borderless XUL pop-up window from a background tab.

The bug was discovered 03/25/2008. The weakness was presented 03/27/2008 by Gregory Fleischer (moz_bug_r_a4) with Mozilla Developers (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-1241 since 03/10/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31684 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox (CESA-2008:0207)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165678 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SA:2008:019)).

Upgrading to version 1.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
