Apple Mac OS X up to 10.3.1 DHCP privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Directory Services in Apple Mac OS X 10.0.2, 10.0.3, 10.2.8, 10.3.2 and Apple Mac OS X Server 10.2 through 10.3.2 accepts authentication server information from unknown LDAP or NetInfo sources as provided by a malicious DHCP server, which allows remote attackers to gain privileges.

The bug was discovered 10/09/2003. The weakness was presented 11/26/2003 by William Carrel (Website). The advisory is available at carrel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-1009 since 12/17/2003. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/09/2021). This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at securiteam.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 48 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12516 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2003-12-19)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at carrel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (13874) and Tenable (12516). Additional details are provided at xforce.iss.net. See 75, 300, 448 and 20159 for similar entries.
