A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (the affected version is unknown). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Unicode Script Processor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Uniscribe (aka new Unicode Script Processor) implementation in USP10.DLL in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Server 2003 SP2, Vista SP1 and SP2, and Server 2008 Gold and SP2, and Microsoft Office XP SP3, 2003 SP3, and 2007 SP2, does not properly validate tables associated with malformed OpenType fonts, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted (1) web site or (2) Office document, aka "Uniscribe Font Parsing Engine Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 09/14/2010 by Carsten Book with Mozilla Corporation as MS10-063 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-2738 since 07/14/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Abysssec in Python and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49221 (MS10-063: Vulnerability in Unicode Scripts Processor Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2320113)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-063 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10449.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (61507), Exploit-DB (15158), Tenable (49221), SecurityFocus (BID 43068†) and OSVDB (67984†).
