A vulnerability was found in ISC DHCP up to 4.2.0 (Network Management Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Message Processor. The manipulation as part of a DHCPv6 Message leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The DHCPv6 server in ISC DHCP 4.0.x and 4.1.x before 4.1.2-P1, 4.0-ESV and 4.1-ESV before 4.1-ESV-R1, and 4.2.x before 4.2.1b1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon crash) by sending a message over IPv6 for a declined and abandoned address.
The weakness was released 01/27/2011 with ISC (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at isc.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-0413 since 01/11/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68198 (Oracle Linux 6 : dhcp (ELSA-2011-0256)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165185 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:003)).
Upgrading to version 4.1.2-P1, 4.1-ESV-R1 or 4.2.1b1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at isc.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
