Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime 7.5.5 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function Check_stack_cookie
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in Apple QuickTime 7.5.5 and iTunes 8.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (browser crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a long type attribute in a quicktime tag (1) on a web page or embedded in a (2) .mp4 or (3) .mov file, possibly related to the Check_stack_cookie function and an off-by-one error that leads to a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 08/17/2008. The weakness was presented 09/18/2008 by securfrog (Website). The advisory is available at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-4116 since 09/17/2008. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/26/2025).
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 32 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115958 (Apple QuickTime Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability - Zero Day).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
