Oracle BEA Product Suite 8.1 stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Oracle BEA Product Suite 8.1 (Application Server Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Unspecified vulnerability in the WebLogic Server Plugins for Apache component in BEA Product Suite 10.3, 10.0 MP1, 9.2 MP3, 9.1, 9.0, 8.1 SP6, 7.0 SP7, and 6.1 SP7 allows remote attackers to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability via unknown vectors. NOTE: the previous information was obtained from the October 2008 CPU. Oracle has not commented on reliable researcher claims that this issue is a stack-based buffer overflow in the WebLogic Apache Connector, related to an invalid parameter.

The bug was discovered 10/14/2008. The weakness was released 10/14/2008 by Esteban Martinez Fayo (Alex) with Application Security, Inc. (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-4008 since 09/09/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/19/2019).

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34781 (Oracle WebLogic Server mod_wl Invalid Parameter Remote Overflow (1150354)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11941.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44435) and Tenable (34781). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 44521, 44520, 44519 and 44518.
