A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apache Struts (Programming Tool Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component DebuggingInterceptor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
** DISPUTED ** The DebuggingInterceptor component in Apache Struts before 2.3.1.1, when developer mode is used, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via unspecified vectors. NOTE: the vendor characterizes this behavior as not "a security vulnerability itself."
The bug was discovered 11/18/2011. The weakness was presented 01/06/2012 by Phil (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vmware.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0394 since 01/08/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 46 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12542 (Apache Struts2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (S2-008)).
Upgrading to version 2.3.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Exploit-DB (18329).
