Wireshark up to 1.6.4 Packet null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.6.4 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Wireshark 1.4.x before 1.4.11 and 1.6.x before 1.6.5 does not properly perform certain string conversions, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) via a crafted packet, related to epan/to_str.c.

The weakness was released 01/10/2012 by Laurent Butti (Website). The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0042 since 12/07/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58849 (CentOS 6 : wireshark (CESA-2012:0509)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120898 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 4 Missing).

Upgrading to version 1.4.11 or 1.6.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (72289) and Tenable (58849). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 4542, 4557, 60574 and 60573.
