A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.2 (Database Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
Unspecified vulnerability in the Oracle Spatial component in Oracle Database 10.1.0.5 and 10.2.0.2 allows remote authenticated users to affect confidentiality and integrity via unknown vectors. NOTE: the previous information was obtained from the January 2009 CPU. Oracle has not commented on reliable researcher claims that this issue is a SQL injection vulnerability that allows remote authenticated users to gain MDSYS privileges via the MDSYS.SDO_TOPO_DROP_FTBL trigger.
The bug was discovered 01/13/2009. The weakness was released 01/14/2009 by Esteban Martinez Fayo (TippingPoint) with Application Security, Inc. (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-3979 since 09/09/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1505 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56063 (Oracle Database Multiple Vulnerabilities (January 2009 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19267 (Oracle January 2009 Security Update Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11238.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (47968), Tenable (56063) and Exploit-DB (8074).
