Google Chrome before 17.0.963.46 does not properly perform casts of variables during handling of a column span, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted document.
The weakness was disclosed 02/08/2012 by Collin Payne (miaubiz) with Chromium Development Community (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Google. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-3958 since 10/01/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/24/2018). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

Upgrading to version 17.0.963.46 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
