F-Secure Anti-Virus up to 8.00 on Windows numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in F-Secure Anti-Virus up to 8.00 on Windows (Anti-Malware Software). This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in multiple F-Secure anti-virus products, including Internet Security 2006 through 2008, Anti-Virus 2006 through 2008, and others, when configured to scan inside compressed archives, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted RPM compressed archive file, which triggers a buffer overflow.

The weakness was presented 02/06/2009 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at f-secure.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-6085 since 02/05/2009. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/04/2021).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35088 (F-Secure RPM Parsing Integer Overflow RCE (FSC-2008-3)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (46016) and Tenable (35088). See VDB-110844, VDB-124594, VDB-142153 and VDB-142154 for similar entries.
