afd.sys in the Ancillary Function Driver in Microsoft Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 Gold and SP1 on 64-bit platforms does not properly validate user-mode input passed to kernel mode, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "AfdPoll Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 02/14/2012 by Tarjei Mandt with Azimuth Security as MS12-009 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0148 since 12/13/2011. The attack needs to be approached locally. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57943 (MS12-009: Vulnerabilities in Ancillary Function Driver Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2645640)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90776 (Microsoft Ancillary Function Driver Elevation of Privilege (MS12-009)).
Applying the patch MS12-009 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
